Best AI contract drafting tools for solo lawyers and small firms (2026)

Facts checked on 14 October 2026. Prices change, so check each vendor's page before you decide. LexDraft is our product.

A solo lawyer or a five-lawyer firm usually wants three things from legal AI: a price you can see, a way to try it on a real agreement this week, and a tool that works in Microsoft Word. This guide compares the options on those terms.

The short answer

  • LexDraft if you want a published price, a free plan with no time limit, and contract review inside Word with tracked-change redlines. Free, then $99 a month.
  • Microsoft 365 Copilot if your firm already runs on Microsoft 365 business plans and wants one AI across Word, Outlook and Teams.
  • Gavel Exec if you want a Word add-in with market benchmarks and a SOC 2 Type II report, and you are happy to pay more per user.
  • CoCounsel Legal if legal research on Westlaw matters as much as drafting.
  • Harvey, Spellbook, LegalOn or Ironclad if you are happy to book a demo for a quote.

What LexDraft does in Word

  • Review with tracked changes. Risk-scored clause review (Critical, High, Medium, Low) and proposed redlines you accept as native Word tracked changes. Word-level edits change only the words that need to change.
  • Playbooks. Four built-in review playbooks: NDA, SaaS MSA, DPA and Services.
  • Checks without AI. Rule-based defined-term and cross-reference checks that run without AI, with a jump to each finding.
  • Citation check. Case-law citations can be cross-checked against CourtListener's US federal and state appellate opinions. Counsel must still verify each authority.
  • US law. Federal, all 50 states and D.C.

Where others are stronger

  • Copilot is cheaper per user if you already pay for Microsoft 365 business plans, and it also works in Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams.
  • CoCounsel and Harvey do legal research. LexDraft is a drafting and review tool, not a research database.
  • Security audits. Gavel Exec, Harvey and Ironclad each say they have SOC 2 Type II audits or reports. LexDraft's SOC 2 Type II audit is on its roadmap and not completed.
  • LegalOn ships far more playbooks (135+ on its entry plan) and covers 23 countries. LexDraft has four and covers US law only.

How to choose

  1. Start with your document. Open a real NDA or services agreement you have already negotiated and run it through two tools. Count the useful findings and the false alarms.
  2. Check the price page. If there is no price, ask about seat minimums and contract length before the demo.
  3. Think about versions. Decide how you will keep one source of truth if a tool works outside your Word file.
  4. Verify everything. No AI tool replaces your review.
